Ellis, Alexander John

Fonetista e matemático. Educouse en Eton e Cambridge, onde se licenciou en Matemáticas (1837). As súas investigacións centráronse sobre todo na fonética e na acústica. En 1873, con Isaac Pitman, iniciaron as investigacións para establecer en taquigrafía o alfabeto do inglés, e baseándose no alfabeto fonotípico de I. Pitman acadaron ese logro en 1847. Cómpre destacar as súas obras The Alphabet of Nature (1844-1845), The Essentials of Phonetics (1848), On the Sensations of Tone (tradución de Die Lehre von den Tonempfindungen, de H. Helmholtz, 1863), On Early English Pronunciation (5 vol, 1869-1889) e Pronunciation for singers (1880).
