Escritora sudafricana. Na súa obra reflectiu os problemas dunha colonia coa metrópole e a inxustiza do réxime sudafricano. Da súa produción destacan The Lying Days (1953), A world of strangers (1958), Occasion for loving (1963), South African Writing Today (1967), The conservationist (Premio Booker 1974), Something Out There (1984), My Son’s Story (1990), The House Gun (1998) e The Pickup (2001). Recibiu o Premio Nobel de Literatura (1991).
