Destacou no campo da semántica léxica, con The Principles of Semantics (1951), Précis de sémantique française (1952) e Semantics: An Introdution to de Science of Meaning (1962), e no da estilística literaria de orientación lingüística, con Style in the French Novel (1957), The Image in the Modern French Novel (1960), Language and Style (1964) e Meaning and Style (1973).
