Realizador cinematográfico. Foi un dos iniciadores do movemento neorrealista con filmes como The Men (1950), Teresa (1951), High Noon (1952), From Here to the Eternity (1953; Oscar ao mellor filme e á mellor dirección), Oklahoma (1955), A Man of all Seasons (1956; Oscar ao mellor filme e á mellor dirección), Julia (1977) e Five Days on Summer (1982).
